Nagios

Considering using Nagios to monitor your Linux-based infrastructure?  No need to spend days or weeks setting up a dedicated Nagios Server, then spend even more time on continued maintenance and installing out-of-the-box Nagios Client scripts. With AppFirst, you can see your application performance information (including all the data the out-of-the-box Nagios Client scripts provide) within minutes of signing up.  If there are some Nagios Client scripts that provide critical data, then you can deploy them and get a consolidated view of the output on the AppFirst Dashboard and Alert Management.

How Does This Work?

To use AppFirst, you just download a collector to every physical, virtual, or cloud server that you want to monitor.  The collector gathers behavioral data from your applications in real-time as they execute.  By default, that data streams to the AppFirst SaaS-based solution every 20 seconds.  If you have Nagios Client scripts running, the collector will automatically pick up the output and send it to AppFirst along with the collector data.  No configurations or changes needed if your Nagios setup is running in the default directories.

Nagios is Free

Yes, Nagios is open-source, but as we all know, free is not free.  First, you have to invest in purchasing a server to run the Nagios Server.  That is followed by days or weeks of setting up and configuring Nagios for the first time.  These time estimates are based on the experiences of our customers as well as our own firsthand experience with Nagios. Your time is valuable!  And if you are busy setting up Nagios, what aren’t you getting done on your never ending list of things to do?  Then, after that initial setup, you need to be constantly vigilant about ongoing maintenance. We’ve heard of organizations dedicating half a head count or more to Nagios maintenance.  That is NOT free.

With AppFirst, you can start with monitoring and alerting, the feature equivalent of Nagios, for $8/server/month.  That is far less than the setup and maintenance costs of using Nagios.

How Do I Get Started?

Simple!  Using Nagios, it will take days or maybe weeks to see information that you can get within minutes from AppFirst.  And with AppFirst, you can see so much more with complete visibility into the entire application as it executes on the infrastructure. Nagios could never deliver that to you.
